My theory is your only concept of time is the time you have actually lived. Remember how a school year took forever to pass? Yet, as you age, the years fly by. As you live longer, one year becomes a smaller percentage of your overall notion of time.
First grade was the first time I remember thinking about the miserable experience of an actual year in school. Since I was not conceptualizing time before age seven I do not think those years should be accounted for in my overall conception of time.
Assuming I live to age 96, the following chart shows the real percentage of life I have lived at each year. Example: On my 32nd birthday, I was 59.65% of the way through my notion of a lifetime.
